Frequently asked questions

Short, accurate answers about what ConvoArk does and doesn’t do.
What does ConvoArk do?

It saves the ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini conversation you have open as one self-contained HTML file on your computer, or exports it as Markdown or PDF. You click its toolbar icon, pick a format and click “Save as offline file” (or the Markdown or PDF button); “Choose messages to save…” keeps only some messages. The HTML file keeps formatting, code, math, images, citations with their original links, and Claude Artifacts and Gemini interactive modules that still run offline.

Is it free? Do I need an account?

All features are currently free, with no usage limits. There is no account or sign-up, and no payment details are collected.

Which sites and browsers are supported?

chatgpt.com (and chat.openai.com), claude.ai and gemini.google.com, in Google Chrome 141 or later on a computer. Other sites, including look-alike sites, cannot start a save.

Does it upload my conversations?

No. Conversation text is processed in your browser and written to a file on your computer; there is no server and nothing is sent to us. PDFs are made in your browser too. To make the file work offline, saving downloads the chat’s images, source icons and the code libraries interactive content uses. Those requests carry no conversation text, but their addresses come from the chat, so the receiving sites can see them. Every kind of request is listed in section 5 of the privacy policy.

HTML, Markdown or PDF: which should I choose?

HTML is one offline file with images, code, math and citations, and Claude Artifacts and Gemini modules you can still use. Markdown is one .md file for editing as text: it has the text, code and citation footnotes, but no images inside and no interactive content. PDF is for printing or sharing a fixed layout; interactive modules appear as a picture.

Can I save only part of a conversation?

Yes. Click “Choose messages to save…” in the popup; a panel lists the messages, and you tick the ones you want. A prompt and its reply can be chosen separately, and rounds keep their original numbers. The selection is not remembered for the next save.

How do images, Artifacts and other content appear in Markdown?

The export is one .md file with no image folder. Embedded images become a short note; images that were not saved but have a web address become image links to that address. Claude Artifacts become a code block with their latest version, interactive modules become one line with their title, citations become footnotes with the original URLs, and thinking keeps only its heading line. Note that some Markdown readers load image links when they open a file, which contacts the site the image is on.

Is the PDF uploaded or made on a server?

No. The extension lays out the conversation on its own page in your browser and opens Chrome’s print window, where you set Destination to “Save as PDF”. Nothing is uploaded, and no extra permission is needed.

Do saved files show the ConvoArk name?

Yes, a small one. HTML and Markdown files end with one line naming ConvoArk, and a PDF shows the name on its cover and in the page footer next to the page numbers. It never covers your conversation, and there are no ads or QR codes.

Can I save a ChatGPT Temporary Chat?

No. Saving reloads the page and a Temporary Chat disappears on reload, so the popup says “This is a Temporary Chat” and the save button is disabled. To keep a chat, turn off Temporary Chat before you start it. On Gemini’s start page, with no conversation open, the popup says “Open a conversation first”.

How do I change the language?

By default the extension follows your browser’s language (Traditional Chinese → Traditional Chinese, other Chinese → Simplified Chinese, Japanese → Japanese, anything else → English). To change it, click the globe button at the top right of the popup and pick a language; “Automatic” follows the browser again. A saved HTML file has its own globe button next to “Aa”, set to “Language it was saved in” by default. Conversations are never translated. This website has its own switch at the top of each page.

Does opening a saved file go online?

No. A saved HTML file makes no network requests when you open it, online or offline: images, fonts and code are inside the file. A web page opens, in a new tab, only if you click a link or a button in interactive content that opens one.

Where is the file saved?

HTML and Markdown files go wherever Chrome saves downloads: the Downloads folder unless you changed it, or the place you choose if Chrome asks. The file name includes the conversation title. A PDF is saved where you choose in the print dialog.

Why does the page reload before saving?

Reloading lets the extension expand collapsed thinking, search results and long replies from the start, so nothing is missed. Unsent text in the message box is lost, so send or copy it first.

What permissions does it ask for, and why?

activeTab: read the tab you clicked the icon on, only after that click. scripting: run its own save script on that page. storage: keep settings and a list of recent saves on your computer. tabs: confirm the page is a supported conversation and collect citation links; Chrome describes this one as “Read your browsing history”, but no history is kept. images.openai.com: download ChatGPT images the page cannot read. One optional permission, for Gemini interactive modules, is asked only when you save them. PDF export needs no extra permission. Details are in section 7 of the privacy policy.

Can I read a saved file on my phone or another computer?

Yes. Copy the HTML file and open it in a modern browser; the layout adapts to small screens. Remember that anyone you give the file to can read everything in it.

Can a very long conversation miss some rounds?

It can. AI sites show only part of a long conversation at a time, so the extension scrolls to the start and saves it section by section. It then checks that nothing was skipped or saved twice; on Claude it also checks the number and order of prompts. If something doesn’t add up, both the popup and the top of the file say so. Let the page load fully and save again.

Why do some images show as placeholders?

When an image’s site does not allow reading it and no screen capture could be taken, a same-size placeholder is kept with the reason and a link to the original. Maps drawn live by the page are not saved; a note marks where they were.

How do I remove everything?

Delete the files you saved. Remove ConvoArk at chrome://extensions; its settings and recent-saves list go with it. A saved file’s reading settings (font, theme) are kept by the browser for that file; clear “Cookies and other site data” in Chrome’s “Delete browsing data” to remove them.

Is ConvoArk made by OpenAI, Anthropic or Google?

No. ConvoArk is an independent tool operated by 一般社団法人JC H&E (JC H&E). It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by OpenAI, Anthropic or Google. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini are trademarks of their respective owners.
